Artificial Iris Implantation

Dr. Harry B. Grabow, founder and medical director of the Sarasota Cataract & Laser Institute and Center for Advanced Eye Surgery, was recently referred a rare patient. Raymond Nye is a 37 year old Caucasian male who was born with congenital aniridia and cataracts. Aniridia is a condition where the iris, the colored part of the eye, is partially or totally absent or severely atrophic. Due to the loss of the normal pupil that restricts excess light from entering the eye, these patients suffer from severe glare that is disabling, often preventing an eye from developing normal vision. In addition, the cataract further reduces the vision and makes the glare even more pronounced.

On September 6, Dr. Grabow removed the cataract and implanted an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL) to restore vision. However, this lens was a special IOL called an “aniridia lens.” This IOL has not only a clear lens with the eye’s prescription but also an artificial iris around the clear lens which together act as an iris and pupil to restrict excess light from entering the eye (see photo).

Mr. Nye was referred to Dr. Grabow by another eye surgeon because of his experience with implantation of aniridia lenses. With the success of the implantation of the right eye, Mr. Nye will be a candidate for an aniridia lens in the left eye.

Aniridia lenses are not yet approved by the US FDA for general ophthalmologic use. They are imported from Germany. With considerable effort and months of planning, the procedure was approved by the FDA. Before surgery, Mr. Nye’s vision was 20/300 in each eye. Less than 24 hours after surgery, Mr. Nye could read 20/40 without glasses, but with a smile.

The Sarasota Cataract and Laser Institute specializes in the surgical correction of cataracts and refractive disorders. Dr. Harry B. Grabow is a pioneer in the field of cataract surgery. He lectures all over the world, writes articles and textbooks, designs surgical instruments, teaches his techniques to surgeons from the US and abroad and participates in US FDA clinical trials of new technology. The Institute is located at 3920 Bee Ridge Road, Bldg. F, Ste A., in Sarasota. For more information, call (941) 921-7744 or visit www.sarasotacataract.com. Posted 09-17-07

Study Finds That Senior Drivers Crash Less After Cataract Surgery

A recent study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that adult drivers with cataracts who undergo cataract removal with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation have half the automobile crash rate of those who do not have their cataracts removed.

Two groups of older adults with cataracts were recruited through 10 ophthalmology and 2 optometry clinics in Birmingham, Alabama. The first group who decided to have cataract surgery consisted of older adults with cataracts who met several criteria at enrollment, including cataract in one or both eyes, no previous cataract surgery in either eye, and at least 55-years of age. A second group of older adults with cataracts were also recruited who met the criteria except that the patients decided not to have cataract surgery as a treatment for their visual problems. In both groups the primary cause of vision loss had to be cataract as judged by the ophthalmologist or optometrist.

The study was conducted from October 1994 through March 1996, with 4 to 6 years of follow-up. Researchers at the University of Alabama-Birmingham used police data to compare the ratio of motor vehicle crashes among 277 cataract patients during the 4-6 year follow-up. They compared the rate for 174 patients who had cataract surgery with 103 who did not and found that the latter group had nearly double the crash rate of the former – about 9 crashes per 1 million miles driven for the non-surgical group vs. 4.74 for the surgical group. During the follow-up, the crash rate for those having surgery increased only 27%, whereas for those who decided against surgery, the crash rate increased nearly 75%.

Older adults are the fastest growing group of drivers on the road today, both in terms of the total number of drivers and the number of miles driven annually. According to an article by Lyman S. Ferguson of Injury Prevention Magazine, one study predicts that older drivers will be involved in 178% more police reported crashes by 2030 – and 155% more fatal crashes by then. By 2030 older drivers are expected to account for as many as 25% of total driver fatalities vs. 14% today.

Common symptoms of a cataract include painless blurring of vision, difficulty reading road signs, sensitivity to light with glare and poor night vision with difficulty driving at night, and muting or yellowing of colors. When a patient experiences some of the visual symptoms listed above and wants improved vision, it may be time to remove the cataract, provided the cataract meets government standards for removal and the surgeon also recommends removal.

At the Sarasota Cataract & Laser Institute, cataract surgery is performed by removing the clouded lens and replacing it with an intraocular lens called an IOL. Foldable IOLs are pliable and can be injected through a tiny incision that heals naturally and quickly without stitches, using only eyedrops to numb the eye. This technique is called No-Stitch/No-Patch/No-Needle cataract surgery. For more information on cataract surgery, visit our web site at www.sarasotacataract.com or call (941) 921-7744. The Institute is located at 3920 Bee Ridge Road, Bldg. F, Suite A, in Sarasota. For more information on this study by JAMA, visit http://jama.ama-assn.org/.

August Is Cataract Awareness Month

Sarasota Cataract & Laser Institute is Offering a Free Cataract Screening August 23, 2002

In celebration of Cataract Awareness Month, the Sarasota Cataract & Laser Institute is conducting a free cataract screening in August to help develop greater public awareness of the importance of medical eye care.

When cataracts limit the ability to perform ordinary tasks or enjoy pleasurable pursuits, surgical removal is a safe and effective recourse. In fact, cataract surgery returns the priceless gift of sight to millions of Americans every year. Cataracts are so common that approximately one in seven Americans is diagnosed with them. But luckily, cataracts are also one of the most curable causes of vision loss

Typically, persons with a cataract may be unaware they have the disorder. Cataracts start out small and have little effect on vision at first. But as a cataract progresses, it clouds more of the eye’s lens. Common symptoms of a cataract include painless blurring of vision, sensitivity to light with glare, poor night vision, and fading or yellowing of colors.

The Sarasota Cataract & Laser Institute is offering a free cataract screening on August, 23, 2002 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Institute. For more information and an appointment, please call (941) 921-7744. This screening is open to individuals who suspect a cataract is possibly impairing their vision. Dr. Harry B. Grabow, who has performed thousands of “No-Stitch, No-Patch, No-Needle” cataract procedures, will examine each screening patient. The Institute is located at 3920 Bee Ridge Road, Bldg. F, Suite A, in Sarasota. Released 08-05-02
